Philosopher and poet, Georges Santayana, once said, "Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it," and so it is with church history, as well. Over the centuries various false and heretical teachings have appeared. In some cases they disappeared, and then appeared again later - sometimes under a different name. The student of church history is better prepared to understand new schisms, false teachings and heresies when he/she knows what has "come down the pike" previously.
The purpose of this page of our site is to show a sequential time-line of events in church history. (Some non-church related events are also listed to show their synchronicity in history.) Some events are negative, most are positive. They are all, however, part of history.
Rather than just present the historical information on this page (visible at first glance), the time-line is set up in such a way that the reader can look at a date, try to remember what happened that year, and then put their mouse over the date to see the answer.
(As you put your mouse over each date, a pop-up message will show a brief description of what happened that year. As you move your mouse away from the date, that window will disappear. Some of the windows contain a great deal of information. These larger windows will remain open when you move your mouse away from the date - until you close them by moving your mouse over the uper-right "close" caption. If the information pop-up window displays below the bottom of the screen, scroll the time-line up the page, and then display it again.) |
